Next to my job at Stanford I enjoy the life that the culturally rich San Francisco Bay Area has to offer. I live in the city of San Francisco in the Bernal Heights district, a nice, a typical neighborhood with Victorian houses, local bakers, butchers and plenty of international cuisine to savor.

I love music, specifically classical music. I am a classically trained flutist and can play most of the concert flutist repertoire. Once in a while I give a recital for friends.

Next to music I love sports, particularly cycling, triathlon, badminton and skiing.

In 2010, I participated in the Aidslifecycle, a 545 Mile ride from SF to LA to help people that live with HIV/AIDS. I was able to raise $6500 thanks to many friends and colleagues at Stanford. As the only gay Faculty member in the School of Earth Sciences, this was a truly rewarding experience. This year, I am training new riders for the same event taking place in June, 2011.
